Abstract: Dorothy Fennel is a labor historian and founding Director of the Office of Special Projects for Unions at the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Special Projects for Unions utilized grant funding to teach labor history to a diverse audience, as well as training union members and retirees how to design their own history projects. The collection consists of black and white photographs, the majority of which document Union Square's Labor Day celebration in 1998, as well as a performance by New York City's Labor Chorus. All photographs were taken by Jack Dumars, co-editor of New York Generator, the newletter of the Communications Workers of America, Local 1101.

Historical/Biographical Note

Dorothy Fennel is a labor historian and founding Director of the Office of Special Projects for Unions at the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Special Projects for Unions utilized grant funding to teach labor history to a diverse audience, as well as train union members and retirees how to design their own history projects. Fennell is the writer of a cycle of three musical plays on Union Square's role in social and political history: "Marching to Union Square," "Women's Voice's from Union Square," and "Meet Me at Union Square," which were produced by Special Projects for Unions.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of 48 black and white photographs, the majority of which document Union Square's Labor Day celebration in 1998, particularly speakers and digitaries such as Rudy Giuliani, Brian McLaughlin and George Pataki. Also included in the collection are a small number of photographs of a performance by New York City's Labor Chorus, picturing labor historian Debra Bernhardt (1953-2001). All photographs were taken by Jack Dumars, co-editor of New York Generator, the newletter of the Communications Workers of America, Local 1101.
