Abstract

Martin Lapan (1922-2008) was New York State Director of the Jewish Labor Committee until 1984 and subsequently its Executive Director until his retirement in 1993. The Martin Lapan Photographs Collection contain 80 photographs and one photograph album from the 1970s through the 1990s.

Historical/Biographical Note

Martin Lapan (1922-2008) was New York State Director and subsequently Executive Director of the Jewish Labor Committee (JCL) until his retirement in 1993. The JCL was founded in 1934 in response to the rise of Fascism in Europe and from the 1960s onward focused on its role as a link between the labor movement and the Jewish community.

Scope and Content Note

The Martin Lapan Photographs Collection contain 80 photographs and one photograph album from the 1970s through the 1990s. There are 65 color photographs, including 2 passport photographs, photos of Jewish Labor Committee (JLC) functions, and photos of a trip to Israel. The photograph album, created in 1993 for Lapan's retirement as Executive Director of the JLC, contains 50 pages that hold 86 4"x6" color snapshots and 14 4"x6" black and white snapshots. Some photographs in the album have captions. There are also 2 loose color and 1 loose black and white snapshots with the album.
