Scope and Content Note

The Collection of Soviet Union Photograph Albums and Photographs contains two untitled photograph albums and photographs depicting activities in the Soviet Union and led by the Soviet state during the 1930s and 1940s. One photograph album includes photographs of large-scale construction and city planning projects in the Soviet Union, likely during the Joseph Stalin era in the 1930s or 1940s. The other photograph album contains photographs from the U.S.S.R. Conference for Peace held in Moscow in August 1949. All photographs include English-language captions. The inside front cover of the album contains a sticker with the emblem of the Ernest C. Ropes Memorial Library at the American Russian Institute and signature of Harlow Shapley. Additionally, there are photographs from the 1937 Soviet film "Lenin in October". Small photographs are mostly 5" x 7." Large photographs are mostly 9" x 11" and have "MADE IN THE USSR" inscribed in the lower righthand corner. There are also photograph negatives.
