Abstract: The Workingmen's Cooperative Publishing Association was a socialist organization affiliated with the Socialist Party of New York, and the governing board of New York Call, a socialist daily newspaper, published between 1908 and 1923, which was eventually prohibited from second-class mailing status by the Postmaster General of the United States for violating provisions of the Espionage Law in 1917. The collection consists of correspondence, by-laws, organizational papers and membership lists, and some printed material created by the Association and other Socialist organizations. The material largely relates to pubishing business matters, fund raising schemes, and staff and editorial difficulties. Most of the correspondence is that of financial secretary Julius Gerber. Other correspondents include W. J. Ghent and Algernon Lee.

The Workingmen's Cooperative Publishing Association was a socialist organization affiliated with the Socialist Party of New York, and the governing board of New York Call, a socialist daily newspaper, published between 1908 and 1923 (also known as the  New York Evening Call). The  Call was eventually prohibited from second-class mailing status by the Postmaster General of the United States for violating provisions of the Espionage Law in 1917.

Scope and Contents

The collection primarily consists of correspondence, by-laws, organizational papers and membership lists created by the Association. There is also some printed material created by the Association and other Socialist organizations. The documents span from 1908 to 1920. The material largely relates to business matters concerning the publication of the New York Call, fund raising schemes, and staff and editorial difficulties. Most of the correspondence is that of financial secretary Julius Gerber. Other correspondents include S. John Block, W. J. Ghent, Ben Hanford and Algernon Lee.
