Historical/Biographical Note

Ben Josephson (1895-1980), served in various administrative capacities at Camp Tamiment in Pennsylvania from 1941-1968. He was active in the Socialist Party and the labor movement. He was associated with the Rand School and was instrumental in the establishment of the Tamiment Library at NYU. Josephson gave support to the New Leader and Labor History and was elected, in 1976, President of the People's Educational Camp Society (PECS), the corporate entity that founded and oversaw Camp Tamiment.

Scope and Contents

The first three boxes of the collection principally contains contains personal letters, along with a few PECS and Rand School documents, a folder relating to Berthy Mailly (Treasurer of PECS), several pamphlets (most related to Camp Tamiment or the Rand School). The letters illustrate the character of Josephson's close contact with his many friends, and also his administrative duties as Director of Camp Tamiment. The last box, an unprocessed addendum donated to the Library after Josephson's death, contains a large accordion file of correspondence, a chapter length memoir, a lengthy oral history transcript of an interview conducted in several sessions sometime in the 1970s by Dorothy Swanson (then head of the Tamiment Library), a 50th birthday scrapbook of letters from friends, greeting cards, etc.

There is a preliminary folder level inventory available at the Library for the first three boxes, although researchers should be aware that the folder titles in the inventory vary somewhat from those written on the folders themselves. PLEASE DIRECT FURTHER INQUIRIES TO: tamiment.wagner@nyu.edu
