The Committee for Democratic Election Laws was formed in 1971 to coordinate non-partisan court challenges to discriminatory election laws across the country. It challenged a number of statutes such as Pennsylvania's restrictions on minority party candidates, Florida's ten cent filing fees, loyalty oaths in Illinois, and age requirements for candidates and voters. The collection consists of court documents, including transcripts, motions and appeals, as well as brochures and other publicity material.

Scope and Contents

The Committee for Democratic Election Laws Records document the work of the committee between 1973 and 1974 regarding election laws in New York City. The collection consists mainly of copies of court transcripts, motions, and appeals regarding a civil lawsuit brought by the Coalition for Education in District One against the New York City Board of Elections. Also included are brochures, press releases, clippings, and newsletters describing the work of the committee.
