The AAUP's purpose is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good. The collection consists of a portion of the records of the American Association of University Professors Academic Freedom Committee, and consists of files titled by years, topics, individuals, and universities, all relating academic freedom.

The American Association of University Professors was founded in 1915 by John Dewey and others. The AAUP's purpose is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good.

The files contain newspaper and periodical clippings and other printed emphemera, reports, circulars, some correspondence, and pamphlets, most produced by other organizations. The bulk of the material covers the 1950s-1970s.
