Abstract

Abe Weisburd (1907-1995) was a radical activist and journalist who wrote regularly for the National Guardian (aka Guardian), a leftist weekly newspaper (1948-1992). This collection contains color slides and a scrapbook, which primarily date from the 1970s and early 1980s. The slides incorporate both his private travel slides and his political travel slides spanning the years 1969-1984. The scrapbook contains writings by Weisburd, biographical notes, photos, and letters from friends and family.

Historical/Biographical Note

Abe Weisburd (1907-1995) was a radical activist and journalist who wrote regularly for the National Guardian (aka Guardian), a leftist weekly newspaper (1948-1992). He was once a member of the Communist Party and the American Labor Party. He was involved in solidarity work for Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Cuba and was active in the anti-Vietnam War movement. Additionally, he had been a member of the Communist Party and the American Labor Party.

This collection has not been arranged by an archivist. The materials are arranged in the order in which they were received from the donor.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains color slides and a scrapbook, which primarily date from the 1970s and early 1980s. Weisburd's slides incorporate both his private travel slides and his political travel slides spanning the years 1969-1984. About half of the slides document Weisburd's political travels. Weisburd's slides document his trips to Iceland, Aruba, Nova Scotia, the Florida Everglades, New England, Paris, Puerto Rico, Santiago, Africa, China, the USSR, Cuba, Chicago, New York City, Washington D.C. (for many demonstrations), Philadelphia (for a demonstration related to the U.S. Bicentennial), Nicaragua, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Most of the slides are labeled with location or date. The scrapbook was presented to Abe by family and friends on his 70th birthday and was added to for subsequent birthdays. It contains writings by Weisburd, biographical notes, photos, and letters from friends and family.

Processing Information

Slides were separated from the scrapbook during initial processing and were established as a separate collection, the Abe Weisburd Slide Collection (PHOTOS 211). In 2014, the slide collection was reincorporated as the Abe Weisburd Slides and Scrapbook.

Revisions to this Guide

June 2017: Jasmine Larkin added "Films 1974 - 1978", Box 5 to the finding aid. During the shelf read of Bobst, 10 West, a box of film with the accession number NPA 2005.087 was found. These materials were incorporated into the finding aid for TAM 450.
