Abstract
V. J. (Vivian Jerauld) McGill (1897-1977) was a philosophy professor and a founding editor of the Marxist journal Science & Society (1936- ). McGill was dismissed from his post at Hunter College (CUNY) in 1954 following the Rapp-Coudert Committee investigation into Communist activities on City College campuses. The bulk of this collection consists of materials pertaining to McGill's career as a Professor of Philosphy. There is also a small amount of material pertaining to V.J. McGill's dismissal from Hunter College, including correspondence, court documents, statements, personnel records and newspaper clippings.
Historical/Biographical Note
V. J. (Vivian Jerauld) McGill (1897-1977) was a philosophy professor and a founding editor of the Marxist journal Science & Society (1936- ) who was dismissed from his post at Hunter College (CUNY) in 1954 following the Rapp-Coudert Committee investigation into Communist activities on City College campuses. He resumed his teaching career in 1960, and from 1964-1973 taught at San Francisco State College. He published several books, including Schopenhauer (1931) and Emotions and Reason (1954) and from 1940-1977 was on the editorial board of Philosophy and Phenomenological Research.

Scope and Contents
The bulk of this collection consists of materials pertaining to V.J. McGill's career as a Professor of Philosphy at Hunter College and San Fransisco State College. These materials include correspondence, handwritten notes, manuscripts and published articles by various authors. V.J. McGill correspondended extensively with many colleagues, but in particular with Mortimer Adler from the Institute for Philosphical Research. There is also correspondence pertaining to a research project on freedom and a project called "Great Ideas Today".
There is also a small amount of material pertaining to V.J. McGill's dismissal from Hunter College in 1954 after the Rapp-Coudert Committee investigation into Communist activities on the campuses of the City Colleges. Materials pertaining to McGill's dismissal include general correspondence (including McGill's search for new employement), correspondence with Hunter College President George Shuster, correspondence with the Board of Higher Education, and finally correspondence with his attorney Lawrence Seigal. Other related material includes court documents, statements, personnel records and newspaper clippings.
