Series XIX: Missing Children, 1984-1985

Scope and Content Note

The 28-minute documentary Missing Children (  Niños Desaparecidos) was released in 1985 and shows the efforts of grandmothers to locate their grandchildren who were among the victims of the Argentine military junta's "Dirty War" in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The film includes interviews with military men and with children who were found and reunited with their families. Videos in this series include copies full-length version with English, Spanish, and French subtitles.

Historical/Biographical Note

During the period that has come be known as Argentina's "Dirty War" (1976-1983), the military dictatorship abducted an estimated 30,000 people, which included as many as 500 children that were placed with either families of the military or adopted by families that did not realize their history.

In 1985, Estela Bravo's Missing Children won a Special Jury Prize given by the International Catholic Organization of Cinema (OCIC), a Silver Hugo Award from the Chicago International Film and Video Festival, and other accolades.

This video contains full versions of the short documentaries Missing Children and  Returning to Chile.  Missing Children is featured on the first 25 minutes of the tape, and  Returning to Chile begins at minute 25:40. Video quality of this tape is very poor at times.
