Abstract

The collection contains over 200 cartoons, drawings, posters and related clippings reflecting Loeb's support for labor, liberal Democrats and Israel. Most of the work was done in the mid-1930s for the Jewish Daily Forward and International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

Historical/Biographical Note

Mitchell Loeb (1889-1968) was an artist and cartoonist whose work reflected his support for labor, liberal Democrats, and Isael. Loeb was born in Poland and came to the United States as a teenager. For a short period after World War I, Loeb was an artist for The Jewish Daily Forward and The Jewish Day. After, he ran a commercial art studio in New York City.

Scope and Contents

The Mitchell Loeb Papers consist of 223 items total, covering a number of different meda. It includes 35 posters, 141 drawings, seven graphic items, nine pamphlets, 23 black and white photographs, three 8x10 negatives and five newspaper clippings. Dated items range from the mid 1930s to the mid 1950s and consist mainly of work done by Loeb himself for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) and the Jewish Daily Forward newspaper.
