Abstract

This collection contains a scrapbook and images of Theodore Zittel (1903-1950), a labor publicity director. The bulk of the collection is from the 1940s and documents the strike against the Brass Rail restaurant.

Historical/Biographical Note

Theodore "Ted" Zittel, born March 28, 1903, was a reporter and labor union representative and publicist. In 1937, Zittel worked as a representative for the American Telegraphists Association, the Transport Workers Union, and was an active member in the American Newspaper Guild. In 1941, he represented the Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Alliance during its seven year strike against the Brass Rail Restaurant in New York City. Zittel also wrote articles for the Daily Worker under the pen name "Ted Benson." He was stricken with a heart attack and died on April 25, 1950.

Scope and Content Note

This collection contains photographs of Ted Zittel and photographs from the 1937 Transport Workers convention. It also contains one scrapbook of clippings, photographs, the Brass Rail Striker, and other ephemera from the strike against the Brass Rail Restaurant in New York City (745 Seventh Avenue) from 1939-1947. The strike was led by the Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Alliance, Local 89--Pastry Cooks and Assistants Union, and Local 16--Waiters Union. Ted Zittel was the publicity manager for the strike. The collection also contains newspaper clippings about Zittel.
