Abstract
Harry Kelber (1914-2013) was a union activist and labor historian known for his critiques of the labor movement's leadership. This collection contains correspondence, pamphlets, flyers, printouts of on-line newsletters, and videotapes and DVDs related to Harry Kelber's work as a labor journalist, labor historian, and advocate of union democracy.
Historical/Biographical Note
Harry Kelber (1914-2013) was a union activist and labor historian known for his critiques of the labor movement's leadership. He began his activism in the labor movement in 1939, serving as the editor of two labor newspapers. He also worked for many years as a union printer and was involved in the 1962-1963 New York City newspaper strike, serving as the editor of the daily strike bulletin. He was also involved in the implementation of labor education programs at Cornell University and Empire State College. Kelber was a senior professor at Empire State College until his retirement in 1984.
From 1985-1990, Kelber served as education and cultural director of the Electrical Workers Union, Local 3, of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. In that same period, he was the coordinator and principal instructor of the Trade Union Leadership Institute of the New York City Central Labor Council.
Kelber's autobiography, My 70 Years in the Labor Movement, was published in 2006.
