Abstract
The Josie Simon Papers contain materials documenting the activities of Union Locals of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) in New York City during the 1950s and 1960s. The ILGWU once represented over 80,000 union members employed in more than 2,000 shops in the eight-state New York Metropolitan dress market. Materials include records concerning the rank-and-file groups in the Italian Dress and Waistmakers' Union (Local 89) and the Dressmaker's Union (Local 22) of the ILGWU.
Scope and Contents
The Josie Simon Papers contain materials documenting the activities of Union Locals of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) in New York City during the 1950s and 1960s. The ILGWU once represented over 80,000 union members employed in more than 2,000 shops in the eight-state New York Metropolitan dress market. Materials include records concerning the rank-and-file groups in the Italian Dress and Waistmakers' Union (Local 89) and the Dressmaker's Union (Local 22) of the ILGWU.
Records from Local 22 include newspaper clippings, memos to dress makers, itemized schedules for section piece work, supplements describing working conditions, guides for garment prices. Records document union efforts to implement enforced guides for piece work rates as well as organize and bargain for New York dress workers. Records from Local 89 include By-Laws, member pamphlets, newspaper clippings, 1965 contract negotiations, and local election flyers.
