Abstract

The Alfred E. Steers papers and photographs, spanning the period 1886 to 1948 and measuring 3.1 linear feet, contain materials concerning the life and career of Alfred E. Steers (1860-1948). Included in the collection are correspondence; biographical material; three scrapbooks containing clippings pertaining to Steers' military service, court cases, and Brooklyn Borough presidency (1910 to 1913); photographs; and ephemera.

Biographical note

Alfred E. Steers (1860-1948) was a grocer and real estate salesman from the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn. He went on to become a jurist and served as Brooklyn Borough President, from January 1910 through June 1913. Steers was active in the Kings County Volunteer Firemen's Association, as well and in several other civic organizations. He also served in the 14th Regiment of the National Guard of New York State. While serving as Brooklyn Borough President, Steers threw out the first baseball at the opening game at Ebbets Field on April 9, 1913.

The Alfred E. Steers papers and photographs, spanning the period 1886 to 1948 and measuring 3.1 linear feet, contain materials concerning the life and career of Alfred E. Steers (1860-1948). Included in the collection are correspondence; biographical material; three scrapbooks containing clippings pertaining to Steers' military service, court cases, and Brooklyn Borough presidency (1910 to 1913); photographs; and ephemera. The bulk of the collection pertains to Steers' position as a jurist, to his activity in the Kings County Volunteer Firemen's Association, and to his service in the 14th Regiment of the National Guard of New York State. The scrapbook of news clippings documenting Steers' career as a judge records the individual cases he presided over, often in great detail.
