Abstract

Composition books and an account book belonging to Maude DeForest Winder Rawlins and dated 1880-1901.

Biographical note

Maude DeForest Winder was born on March 6, 1866 in New York to William Guthrie Winder and Julia Augusta DeForest Winder. The family lived in Brooklyn, where Maude attended P.S. 4. In 1884 she married William E. Rawlins. According to census records, they both worked as masseurs. Their children included Elaine Rawlins Herne, Marion A. Rawlins, Hugh S. Rawlins, Gertrude E. Rawlins Ferguson, Gerald C. Rawlins and Richard G. Rawlins. Maude passed away on October 21, 1958 and is buried in the Cemetery of the Evergreens in Brooklyn.

Scope and Contents

The collection includes a school homework book from May 1880, a school composition book from P.S. 4 dated 1881-1882, and a housekeeping account book from 1901.

Originally minimally processed to the collection level. In April 2023, two folders from this collection (containing material by Maggie E. Briggs and Kate St. John Reynolds) were removed to the Bretz family papers (ARC.321). The W.H. Condit mathematics exercise book (erroneously credited to H.W. Condit) was removed to the Blackburne, Woodward, and Ottaway family papers (2013.006). The L.P. Nostrand diary was removed to the Anderson and Nostrand family papers (ARC.199). Subsequently, the collection was renamed and described to better reflect its altered contents.
