Scope and Contents

This collection contains approximately 500 European prints, ca. 1750-1920. Most are nineteenth century British or French commercially produced prints, but Italian, German and Dutch prints are also represented. They include lithographs, chromolithographs, etchings, engravings and photogravures. Many are chromolithographs printed as newspaper and magazine supplements, or as advertisements, including several of Pears Soap's annual advertisements. Other materials include prints of historical or military subjects, genre scenes or religious scenes, many after C.R. Eastlake, and advertisements for music concerts. There are also plates from several books: Cuvier's "Animal Kingdom;" illustrations to Dickens and Shakespeare, many after C.R. Leslie; Cruikshank's six illustrations to the 1828 edition of "John Gilpin;" William Henry Pyne's "Microcosm," a study of occupations; engravings after John Hayter from "Beauties of the Court of Queen Victoria" (1850).
