Abstract

The collection includes 6 oversize prescription books covering date ranges 1895-1900, 1902-1903, and 1914-1917, from the predecessor firm, Stock Pharmacy, until April, 1899 and then of Frank Avignone & Co.

Biographical / Historical

What became the Avignone Pharmacy was established in 1832 and was located at 59 MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, New York. Known then as the Stock Pharmacy, it was purchased and renamed in 1898 by Frank (Francis Titus) Avignone, an immigrant from Italy. Avignone moved the pharmacy in 1929 to 226 Bleecker St. It remained in the Avignone family until 1974, when it was sold to Dominic Grassi. Grassi's son, Mike, took over the business; he was the donor of this collection to N-YHS. Confronted with rising rent rates, the business, then known as Avignone Chemists, closed in 2015.

Scope and Contents

For many years until the business closed in 2015, a large prescription book was displayed in the shop's window. That particular book is not in N-YHS's collection.
